Tagore flavour, Bengal to Paris

SANTINIKETAN: From Santiniketan to Paris, Visva-Bharati wants Rabindranath Tagore's sesquicentennial celebrations to leave a permanent mark.

Tagore's dream child, Visva-Bharati, is collaborating with a number of international and national agencies for projects related to its creator. The most ambitious one is to publish Tagore's works in chronological order. Given the vast body of writing that the Nobel laureate has left behind, the new series will extend to anywhere between 60-80 volumes.

Sunday — Pochishe Boishakh — will be the beginning of a series of events V-B has lined up. The first international event will be held at Paris on May 12, organised by Unesco in collaboration with V-B. Later this year, the UN body will organise an international seminar on Tagore as a 'poet of humanity', with around 22 international speakers. This year also marks the 80th anniversary of Tagore's first exhibition in Paris as a painter. Unesco and the National Gallery of Modern Art are putting together an exhibition of Tagore's original paintings in Paris, which will travel to other countries.

Work on bringing out a commemorative edition of 'India Perspectives' exclusively on Tagore has reached its final stages. The 150-page volume will have rare photographs as well as writings by the likes of Amartya Sen, Ina Puri and Sugata Bose. The issue will cover all aspects of Tagore's multi-faceted genius and is being funded by the ministry of external affairs. "We are trying to rope in an international publication house for publishing the work," said U N Singh, acting director, Rabindra Bhawan, and in-charge of the 150th anniversary celebrations.
