Live concerts on the web

Now catching your favourite musical act live is as easy as switching on your computer. ArtistAloud.com, the Mumbai-based portal dedicated to promoting Indian musicians, will be hosting monthly web concerts by leading bands and musicians in India.

These concerts, webcerts, have already featured musicians like Shibani Kashyap and Nakash and Sargam. We are told that the two concerts attracted over 10,000 hits on the website. A few days ago, they featured Raghu Dixit.

“We are dedicated to providing a platform for independent artists in India,” says Soumini Paul, the general manager of the portal. Paul explains that this is the first time in India that a musician will be playing exclusively for a web audience. “We usually ask bands to play on a subsidised fee and they come aboard because of the unique initiative.

The costs incurred (bandwidth, equipment, artist fee) are currently paid for by our sponsors.

The audience will not have to pay for anything,” she elaborates.

Currently, the webcerts will be held every month on a specified date from 4 pm to 5 pm. Paul explains that the fixed time encourages “appointment viewing.” The portal will also be hosting the concerts on You- Tube, where they have their own private channel. So if you miss your favourite act, you can catch the highlights on the networking website. The performances are also being publicised through Facebook. In the coming months, you might be able to catch acts like Swarathma, Euphoria, Avial etc as Paul mentions that the portal is currently in talks to bring them on board.
