Saina Nehwal : The Prodigal Young Hyderabadi

Saina Nehwal is currently ranked number 3 in the world by Badminton World Federation. It is the biggest achievement for any Indian woman Badminton Player.

India’s badminton star Saina Nehwal said her decision to play in selected international tournaments has worked wonders for her and the day is not far when she will be the World number one. India’s badminton star Saina Nehwal, currently ranked 3rd, is now participating in limited tournaments and is more focussed on winning titles.

With three important events around, howz the preparation going on?

My preparations are excellent. I am doing my best. This year the focus is to do well in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. If I continue like this, I can be soon the number one, hopefully. Even the world’s top player is under pressure to win every match. I think pressure will always be there when you are a top seed. The draw is tough.

Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and the world championship, what fitness regimen are you following?

Practice (physical) and matches and as per the camp schedule we follow meticulously. I am playing in selected tournaments now and it has worked well for me. It is giving me adequate time to train and also spend quality time with my family. So when I go back to courts, I am fresh, focussed and well prepared to face the top players and the aim is to win every tournament.

Could you take us through the practise sessions? How many hours do you practice in a day?

It is 3 hrs in morning and almost 3 in the evening and Sunday off. I’m training really hard. I am in good shape, probably the best in my career so far. It will be a tough competition ahead.

What are the targets you are setting yourself for these tournaments?

Always I want to win the records will follow . And I am quite confident of performing well.

What was your experience in the Uber Cup played early this year? What are the challenges ahead you forsee?

I enjoyed. It is the first ever chance for India to play finals, may be in future the younger generation will still do better. The Indian team was high on confidence ahead of the tournament. The Indian players have had some good results recently.

As of challenges, with three tough championships around, the focus is on game strategy & deliverables. We are doing our best and looking forward to playing these tournaments.
